Ingredients
- Thick sliced or larger pieces of bread
- Thick sliced bread is the way to go for French toast! Thin sliced bread can turn into a soggy mess, if not done by way of using a pastry brush like this recipe for Eggless French Toast. You can also use larger bread slices like Pepperridge Farm 100% Whole Wheat bread or Dave's Killer bread (not the thin sliced).
- French toast batter: milk, egg white, vanilla extract and cinnamon
- There are different types of milk that can work well for French toast. It's mostly based on your food preferences and dietary needs. Below are my recommendations.
- For whole milk cow's milk - whenever possible buy organic, grass-fed
- For soymilk - unsweetened, organic

- Oil
- I really like using and recommending olive oil (used for baking). It has more heart-healthy fats and when you use the olive oil made for baking you won't have an "olive oil" aftertaste.

- Turkey bacon or sausage

Best Toppings
There are probably countless ways to eat French toast.
If you want to go for a "lower sugar" option, adding fruit always helps. The fruit still adds sweetness (natural sugars) so that you won't need as much added sugar (from a syrup).
- Fresh or frozen berries
- If using frozen berries, simply microwave them until heated, then add to the French toast.
- Bonus: Using frozen berries is great if you want to use less syrup. The frozen berries have a nice blueberry juice that is wonderful poured on top of the French toast.
- Sliced banana + walnuts with a drizzle of maple syrup
- Stewed apples "no sugar added"
- Sliced strawberries with buttery honey glazed pecans
Storage
Good for 3-4 days in the fridge.
These freeze really well! Let the French toast cool before freezing.
Quick method for freezing: Lay French toast in-between pieces of wax paper. Then add them to a labeled freezer bag with the name and date. For best quality freeze for up to 3 months.
