Mashed banana overnight oats are THE EASIEST kind of overnight oats that you can do. With only 4 ingredients you can't get any easier. They are a great meal prep recipe and perfect for busy mornings.

MASHED BANANA OVERNIGHT OATS: WHAT YOU'LL NEED

    Ingredients

    • Old fashioned oats
    • Milk
    • Banana
    • Walnuts
    • Honey *optional

    Equipment

    • Mason jar or Glass container with lid
    • Measuring cups
    • Liquid measuring cup
    • Fork

HOW TO MAKE MASHED BANANA OVERNIGHT OATS

To really get these oats to taste sweet, without adding sugar, you gotta REALLY mash the banana! I mean mash it. Almost like baby food consistency. THIS is how you get your oats to taste sweet. Chunks of banana won't fully make it sweet.

Mix all ingredients together (oats, milk, and walnuts). Then store in the fridge overnight and eat in the morning.

    FAQ

Can I just use a whole banana?

For this recipe, I only use half a banana. It's really all you need, but there is nothing wrong with going ahead and using the whole banana. If you are watching the carbs, then just stick with half a banana.

    Can I add sugar?

Sure, brown sugar or honey would go really well with these oats. If you want to use sugar, try to keep it to one teaspoon. For a healthier version, leave the sugar off.

How are these different from instant oats?

As a dietitian, I don't recommend instant oatmeal very often. The reason is that there is some research that shows it could raise blood sugars faster since it's been more processed than old-fashioned oats, for example. Since diabetes and prediabetes affect so many people I just don't tend to recommend instant oats.

This recipe for overnight oats is a lot healthier! You're pretty much making your own instant oats.

    Equipment

    Mason jar
    Glass container with lid
    measuring cups
    Liquid measuring cup

    Ingredients

    • ½ cup old fashioned oats
    • 6 ounces unsweetened soy milk or your favorite milk
    • ½ banana
    • 2 tablespoon chopped walnuts
    • 1 teaspoon honey *optional

    Instructions

    • Take half a banana and mash it with a fork in the botm of your mason jar or container. **It's important to mash it REALLY good so that it mixes well with the oats and milk. This is how you get the sweetness from the banana.
    • Add all other ingredients to a mason jar or a container with a good tight lid. Give it a good stir and store overnight in thefridge.
    • Eat it cold or warm it up in the microwave. *Microwave times will vary.

    Notes

If you don't like cold oats then you can microwave them. Start with 1 minute and cook more as needed.
You can use whatever your preference is for milk!
If ½ cup of oats is too much then use ⅓ cup old-fashioned oats and reduce milk to 4 ounces (½ cup)
*This recipe is very easy to double since it only requires ½ a banana, just make two of these and you'll have breakfast for two days!

Hi KeyVion - This looks delicious and perfect for those somewhat over ripe bananas that you really don't want to eat. I don't have any walnuts, but I do have a question. Most overnight oats recipes call for 1/2 cup oats to 1/2 cup milk. You have 6oz. of milk. That won't make it kind of soupy? Thanks

Hi Pam! I am so sorry I missed your comment. You can definitely adjust the amount of milk to your preference. Starting with 4 ounces is fine. I put 6 ounces because the oats expand overnight and I usually end up adding more in the morning when I warm it up in the microwave. I personally don't like cold oats :-).
