Cajun Green Beans (Quick & Easy!)

June 12, 2021 by KeyVion Miller RDN, LD/N 13 Comments

An easy vegetable side dish that's big on flavor! These "Cajun Green Beans" are perfect for anyone looking to switch up the flavor of green beans! (low carb, gluten-free)

This recipe for cajun green beans needs only 3 ingredients. It's simple and flavorful! Exactly how vegetables should be in my opinion :-).

Cajun spices have their own unique flavor and it pairs really well with fresh OR frozen green beans.

    WHAT YOU'LL NEED

    • Fresh or frozen green beans
    • Olive oil
    • Cajun seasoning

    Equipment

    • Baking sheet
    • Foil
    • Spatula

    CAJUN GREEN BEANS RECIPE

Step 1: When starting with fresh green beans, cut the ends off of the fresh green beans. Place all of them in a colander and rinse well under running water. If you are starting with frozen greens you can skip this step.

Step 2: Preheat the oven to 425°. Line a baking sheet with foil.

Step 3: Put the green beans in a single layer on the baking sheet. Drizzle extra virgin olive oil and seasoning over the green beans. Let it cook for 12-15 minutes. Pretty much just let it cook until it reaches your desired level of tenderness.

The full and detailed recipe for Cajun Green Beans is at the bottom.

    VARIATIONS

The possibilities are endless here for different flavor combinations. Try any of the ones below or use some of your favorite seasonings!

    • Add onion, peppers or mushrooms (I really liked adding sliced onions!)
    • Creole seasoning
    • Italian seasoning with garlic and parmesan cheese
    • Smoked paprika, garlic and onion

HOW TO KEEP FRESH GREEN BEANS FRESH

The crisper drawer is typically a good place to store produce in the refrigerator. Both fruit and vegetables like high humidity. If you have a low and high function on your crisper drawer, keep it moved all the way to high. This way it stays fresh longer.

For fresh green beans, place them into a bag with holes. They will last ~5 days.

Have A Plant: Fruits & Veggies For Better Health recommends keeping green beans in a plastic bag in the fridge for up to one week.

I really like using a Vejibag. It's a cotton bag that keeps fresh produce, fresh longer in your fridge!

    WHAT TO SERVE WITH THESE

Really anything you want! It’s a great side dish to just about any meal. Here are some ideas below.

    • Meatloaf and mashed potatoes
    • Baked chicken and brown rice
    • Pork loins and sweet potatoes
    • Beans/peas with rice
      • I've got a Black-Eyed Peas and Rice recipe that is delicious with these green beans!

    Spatula
    Mixing bowl
    Cutting board
    Knife
    Colander

    Ingredients

    • 1 12 oz bag fresh green beans can substitute and use frozen green beans
    • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
    • ½ teaspoon cajun seasoning

    Instructions

    • Cut the ends off of the fresh green beans. Place all of them in a colander and rinse well under running water. Preheat the oven to 425° and move one rack to the third level.
    • Line a large enough baking sheet with foil
*This is to be able to mix the seasonings around good and for easy clean up at the end
    • Line the green beans in a single layer on the baking sheet. Drizzle both the extra virgin olive oil and cajun seasoning overthe green beans. Let it cook for 12 minutes. Pull the baking sheet out of the oven and mix the green beans around with the spatula to make sure the seasonings are mixed in.
*If you like, you can cook the green beans for another 3 minutes but it shouldn't need much longer than that.
      Happy Eating!

    Notes

    • Place the baking sheet on the third tier to prevent the green beans from burning
    • The green beans can be kept whole or cut in half. It's all up to you!
    • Adding sliced onions to this recipe is a really nice addition! Onions are a vegetable so it counts.
    • Are you looking for a time-saver tip? Ask the kids or your husband to cut the ends of the green beans for you. You may also try this recipe with frozen green beans. It works out well, you just may need to cook them longer!
