Ingredients
- sourdough bread
- Buy sourdough bread that's already sliced. No need to slice it on your own for this recipe!
- butter, unsalted
- To keep the sodium low for this recipe - use unsalted butter.
- Salt-free Italian seasoning
- You can definitely get creative and use a combination of oregano, thyme, rosemary, but in the spirit of keeping things easy. I recommend just using already mixed Italian seasoning.
- garlic powder
- Garlic powder is a pantry staple that most people have on hand. I'm using garlic powder in this recipe because I think it's easier and I really like how the garlic flavor comes through.
- salt, iodized
- Adding the salt separately for a recipe likes this puts you in more control of how much sodium is added to the garlic bread sourdough.
See recipe card for quantities.
Instructions
Melt butter in a small microwave safe bowl. Add all the seasonings.
Stir seasonings and butter together with the pastry brush.
Use the pastry brush to equally spread the butter mixture between the two pieces of toast.
What to Serve With?
Sourdough garlic bread will go with many pasta dishes, soups and salads.
Even a stew like stewed beef or Lentil Potato Stew for a plant based option.
For a main dish, like Juicy BBQ Meatloaf, ribs, chicken or pork garlic bread sourdough is a nice compliment. I kind of think of it as a replacement for cornbread if you don't have it or just want something different.

How to Make Ahead and Freeze
In the recipe, once you get up to the step where you spread the butter mixture on the bread, this is where you stop and freeze it.
Take out a small baking sheet. Line it with wax paper and place the bread on top. Let it freeze, individually. Then add the slices of bread to a labeled freezer safe bag.
How to Reheat
From the fridge
Warm in the microwave for 15-20 seconds. Microwave times will vary.
From frozen
Bake on a baking sheet at 350 degrees until warm. Toast on BROIL (if needed) to lightly brown the top of the bread.
Top tip
Watch closely on broil so it doesn't burn and make the toast too hard.
