Most people are either "team brussel sprouts" or completely hate them. My guess is if you're here then you are "team brussel sprouts" OR willing to give them a try.

If you're trying them for the first time "Congrats!!" To be honest, they do look a little funky if you aren't used to them, but they taste similar to cabbage. And cooked the right way, they're very good!

    Ingredients

    • Brussel sprouts
    • Light brown, brown sugar
    • Extra virgin olive oil
    • Seasoned salt

See recipe card below for full recipe.

    Instructions

It helps to know how to cut brussel sprouts. I didn't know how to work with them either in the beginning so don't feel bad! I like this short and sweet video below.

For this recipe I am using the first option for cutting brussel sprouts

Pro tip: Don't throw away the undamaged leaves!! They make great "brussel sprout chips". Go ahead and bake them in the oven too.

Depending on how crunchy you like the brussel sprouts you can cook them less than 30 minutes. Just watch them and test with a fork for your desired level of crunch.

Perfect Pairings - What to Eat With Brown Sugar Brussel Sprouts

    • Sweet potatoes go heavenly with this side dish! Pick your protein and you've got a complete meal.
    • Rice or white potatoes along with your protein choice work as well. Just depends on what you're in the mood for.
    • Looking for another veggie? Try these Cajun Green Beans!
    • For a simple rice dish, try Black-Eyed Peas and Brown Rice!

    Storage

Store for up to 3 days in the fridge.

    Nutrition tips

Below I highlight the nutrition benefits of this recipe. By the way, adding a small amount of sugar does not destroy the nutritional value of the food. A healthy diet does not have to mean never eat any sugar every day for the rest of your life.

    Ingredients

    • 1 lb brussel sprouts
    • 1 tablespoon light brown brown sugar
    • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
    • 1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil
    • ¼ teaspoon seasoned salt

    Instructions

    • Preheat oven to 400°. Slice brussel sprouts in half and remove damaged outer leaves. Rinse under running cool water.
    • In a large mixing bowl, add brown sugar, olive oil and salt. Mix together.
    • Toss brussel sprouts with the mixture in the bowl until coated. Place evenly on baking sheet and bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes.
    • Enjoy!

    Notes

    • Don't throw away undamaged leaves. They bake up nicely as "brussel sprout chips", as I like to call them. Go ahead and mix loose leafs in with the mixture and bake.
    • The serving size is set at ½ cup, but you can definitely eat more than that!
