How to Season Canned Green Beans

December 22, 2021 by KeyVion Miller RDN, LD/N Leave a Comment

    Healthy, delicious vegetables do exist!

How to Make Canned Green Beans Taste Good

One of the worst things is forcing yourself to eat bland, nasty vegetables!

Hey, let's be honest. Vegetables really aren't at the top of anyone's list in terms of "favorite foods". Yea, a dietitian just said that.

With that being said, it's important to make an effort to eat flavorful vegetables if you care about your health.

How to Season Canned Green Beans

    Liquid

    • Water
      • You can definitely just use plain ol' water and still get flavorful canned green beans. The key is adding seasonings. Check out the recipe below!
    • Broth or Stock
      • If you want to get fancy and jazz up your green beans more, then use a broth or stock instead of water. This will definitely add some flavor!

Fat: Choose either of the following fats to add. I use 1 tablespoon per 2 cans of green beans. You can always omit adding fat if you like.

    • Olive oil
    • Butter

Seasonings: There are probably endless combinations here. Below are some suggestions.

    • Onion
    • Peppers
    • Smoked paprika
    • Cayenne pepper
    • Cajun seasoning
    • Creole seasoning
    • Garlic

How to Jazz up Canned Green Beans

If you really want to get jazzy, a little bit of meat goes a long way with canned green beans! You can use any of the following.

    • Bacon
      • Yes, a dietitian just said you can add bacon to green beans. I like to recommend uncured pork bacon, because it does not have added chemicals that can increase our risk for certain cancers. Bacon is red meat, which shouldn't be eaten in large amounts according to The American Institute For Cancer Research. I like to recommend eating <12 ounces of red meat per week.
      • 2 pieces for 2 cans should be good!
    • Ham, uncured
    • Better Than Bouillon
      • This is a great seasoning, but you'll want to be mindful of how much you use. The serving size is typically 1 teaspoon. I would use that or less, like ½ teaspoon to not overdue it on the sodium. Nobody wants heart issues, right?
